On 1 April 2014, the major parts of the Act Revising Certain Provisions of Patent Law and Other Acts in the Field of Industrial Property Protection (Gesetz zur Novellierung patentrechtlicher Vorschriften und anderer Gesetze des gewerblichen Rechtsschutzes) of 19 October 2013 entered into force. This act involves many amendments of procedure at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, above all, with regard to patents.
The number of patents in Germany has abruptly increased. Last year, the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) granted 22.1% more patents; the number of patent applications went up by 2.9%. These numbers are taken from the 2013 annual statistics, which has been presented today by the President of the DPMA, Cornelia Rudloff-Schäffer.
